Ergonomic Assessments

Ergosmart Consulting provides workstation ergonomic assessments for individuals or whole departments to maximise comfort and efficiency whilst minimising the risk of injury. We recognise that not all office environments are the same, and there is not a generic “one size fits all” solution to the ergonomic issues faced. Our recommendations are practical and cost-effective (the most expensive chair is not always the most suitable!) and tailored to the individual circumstances. We can also provide advice on sit-stand solutions.  This service may be provided for individuals with or without symptoms or a pre-existing condition.  Examples include staff who:

• Are new to an organisation
• Have relocated to a new workspace or introduced new equipment/work processes
• Have an emerging or existing injury/condition

A Zoom assessment is a convenient way to assess an individual’s home workstation set up, work practices and environment for WHS requirements, particularly when in a remote location where travel is prohibitive, or when isolating due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The assessment covers all the same components as our face to face assessments, including:

• Guidance regarding modifications/adjustments (e.g. chair, work surface height, placement of keyboard/mouse etc.)
• Advice on posture, workstation set up, safe work practices, suitability of furniture & equipment.
• Checklist of WHS issues relevant to working from home, including access/egress, slip/trip hazards, electrical safety, smoke detectors etc.
• Written report provided within 3 working days.

Our Office Ergonomics training services provide participants with the background knowledge and practical skills to analyse their work postures, equipment set up and work processes and encourage behaviour that improves comfort and productivity. The training recognises that correct equipment set up is only part of the control strategy for prevention of injury. Equally as important is how individuals interact with their work and equipment.

Training can be provided in a number of different formats according to an organisation’s needs. Some options for training formats are listed below (these can be used in any combination):

Group Presentation (approximately 1 hour duration) covering:

• Anatomy and mechanics of the spine
• Static or repetitive muscle use and common mechanisms of injury
• Postural awareness, including optimal sitting and standing work postures
• Workstation equipment set up, including adjustment of chair, work surface heights, keyboard/mouse placement, screen placement etc. 
• Posture breaks
• Simple exercises for injury prevention in the office environment

Individual Workstation Review

Workstation reviews would normally follow the group presentation to address any particular issues and reinforce the presentation content. Individual reviews take approximately 10-15 minutes. A report is then compiled summarising any identified issues and recommendations from the individual workstation reviews.

Train the Trainer

For some large organisations, nominated staff can be trained using an ergonomic workstation checklist to provide an “in-house” training and assessment service on an ongoing basis. A more intensive training session would be provided to these individuals following a similar format to the group training above. In addition, the Train the Trainer would involve a significant practical component and competency assessment to ensure that staff are competent in using the workstation checklist with other employees (for example, at induction).

Ergosmart Consulting provides specialised vehicle ergonomic assessments for employees who spend significant periods driving as part of their duties. This may be a passenger vehicle, truck, bus or rail. The service may be provided as a preventative measure or to address an existing issue. It includes:

• Assessment of seated posture and technique for access in and out of a vehicle
• Optimal positioning and adjustment of vehicle seat and steering column
• Recommendations for safe handling and transportation of resources in and out of vehicle
• Education on risk factors and preventative strategies for avoiding injury or managing an existing condition (e.g. targeted stretches)
• Assessment of suitability of a vehicle against individual or job requirements
